The Lavingtons - Andrew Jenkinson
Hello, my name is Andrew Jenkinson, your Liberal Democrat candidate for The Lavingtons in the May 2021 local elections. My ambition, once elected, is to focus on our youth in this community. They are, after all, our futures. Covid-19 has taken its toll in so many ways and our youth and their futures have suffered most.
Who am I?
These days I spend much of my time working for my village community of Great Cheverell with my focus being part of a husband-and-wife team of Churchwardens for St. Peter's. In addition, I'm the Team Lead for our Community Speedwatch.
I'm what's commonly referred to as an Army Brat. Born into a German speaking family, my parents only spoke to me in German. However, at the age of 4, my father left the army, relocating to the UK. Rapidly, I had to learn English so that I could go to school which was not a great success for me, but I did manage a few O-levels and even an A-level in Engineering. Like many youngsters, I didn't know what I wanted for a career until a friend introduced me to computers. To coin a phrase, the rest is history.
I was lucky enough to enter the world of work at a time when it was sufficient to show enthusiasm to progress and evenly luckier to look back on a career that let me work in European countries from Finland to Greece and in many lines of business including Banking, Airline and, notably, Government. Before retiring, I spent a year in Illinois working for a bank there. Undoubtedly, these life experiences have broadened my views in many ways.
These days, it would be nearly impossible for a school leaver to match the opportunities I've had. I feel local government can help by partnering with suppliers to help youngsters with the first steps on their careers by offering apprenticeships, NVQs etc. and, of course, by offering these opportunities within local government.
I've long been a Lib Dem supporter but, in the months, leading up to the last General Election, I felt I needed to do more. Our society is becoming ever more polarised and I felt driven to try and do something about it, so I volunteered to work for our then prospective Parliamentary candidate Jo Waltham. Since then, I have got to know others who felt the same way. I am truly in awe of the work my fellow Lib Dems put into their communities, something I feel honoured to be associated with.
