We will reverse the £22m Tory cuts in Education, improve the Pupil Premium and stop teacher cuts in the Devizes Constituency

Local people have been sharing their worries about secondary and primary schools across the constituency. Schools funding has not kept pace with costs so budgets are being squeezed hard. This is a direct result of the significant cuts to local authority funding from the Government. All school budgets have been reduced in real terms. Some schools have been forced into deficit budgets this year so governors and head teachers have no alternative than to make cuts to make the books balance. This means things like no school trips, losing key support staff (school nurses, careers advisors) and even making teachers redundant. It also means schools asking for more parental support - you will have heard of schools asking for contributions towards books and even exam costs. When people and "hard working families" are "just about managing" is this really the "strong and stable" leadership you want for your children and grandchildren?

The Liberal Democrats will support our young people by investing an extra £7bn in education, by opposing new grammar schools, and by ensuring that per-pupil budgets grow if class sizes do.

Children's education is too often distorted by schools' need to focus on league tables. Teachers deserve to be treated as professionals and given the flexibility to apply their expertise and develop children's passion for learning.
