The Liberal Democrats have warned that Danny Kruger, Conservative MP for Devizes, is risking a "new Windrush-style scandal", after he voted to refuse to offer EU citizens physical proof of their right to stay in the UK.

On Monday (19th October), Tory MPs overturned a Liberal Democrat amendment to the Immigration Bill, which passed in the House of Lords just weeks ago. The amendment would require the Home Office to give EU Citizens physical proof of Settled and Pre-Settled Status, rather than the digital-only system the Home Office is currently pursuing.

Conservatives in the House of Commons rejected the amendment by 331 votes to 260.
Danny Kruger was among those voting to scrap the amendment, while Liberal Democrat MPs and MPs in all other parties voted to retain it.

The latest Home Office figures show that, as of the end of June,11,710 people in Wiltshire have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme for the right to stay in the UK after the Brexit transition period ends. 7,100 have been granted Settled Status so far, while a further 3,860 have been granted temporary Pre-Settled Status.

Following the vote, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael said:

    LOCKDOWN.

March 16th: all non-essential shops in Greece are closed.

Antiparos is about half the size of Guernsey, with less than a 60th of Guernsey's population. It's probably quiet anyway at this time of year. But now: you can hear your blood go round. It's rare for me to see anyone on my long walks around the northern headland.

    February 26th 2020.

As the boat edges into Ermoupoli, things look....... different... Beautiful, pale houses curve like an amphitheatre around the harbour. Not the normal Cycladic cuboids. Ermoupoli went up in the boom years between the 1820's and 1860's, when the harbour was the new nation's busiest. Neoclassical architects. A more feminine, decorative feel to the place. I'm smitten.

Earlier this week, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey called on the four governments of the UK to work together and agree on a set of unified guidelines that would work for families across the UK during the festive season.

We're glad to see that the UK leaders have listened to the Liberal Democrats' calls.

The recent contact tracing figures show that the current system is still woefully inadequate.

This is despite repeated calls for the Government to fix Test and Trace. The test, trace and isolate system is essential to not only slow the spread of coronavirus, but for people to have any hope of ever getting out of the Government's restrictions.

Hundreds of thousands of extra email addresses are being made available via the Lighthouse system. These are from people who have backed at least one of the party's national campaigns. The email addresses come with the necessary permissions to use them.

Previously, such email addresses were not shared with local parties. But this is changing as part of improvements to our use of data, helping grassroots campaigners.

Families across the UK have had an extremely difficult year being separated from their loved ones. They deserve a Christmas that is as normal as possible.

So far, Boris Johnson's government has been badly prepared and slow to act at every stage throughout the Covid-19 crisis. That can't happen again, especially for Christmas.

This committee knows that to get ourselves back to winning ways, we need to be ambitious going forwards and honest about the recent past.

In that vein, this month we discussed the internal investigation we commissioned into the Liberal Democrat response to the Unite to Remain campaign, and its structural and electoral implications for the Party.
