The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

Devizes Constituency covers the towns of Devizes, Marlborough, Ludgershall and Tidworth, together with the large villages of Bulford, Durrington and Pewsey.

Coronavirus - Helping Our Communities here in the Devizes Constituency

Across the country, people are volunteering to help their communities through the Coronavirus outbreak.

Stay at Home. Protect the NHS. Save Lives.

The Liberal Democrats are dedicating resources to supporting that community effort.

That's why we're making this page with links to online resources produced by volunteers and public bodies available.

Please use them and share them with your friends and neighbours. We will be updating it regularly as more resources become available.

We can all make a difference - each and every one of us.

One of the many things that unites Liberal Democrats is our campaigning zeal for our communities. Our drive to change things for the better. A way of working that engages local people in our campaigns.

Many of you have already turned your campaigning zeal wholeheartedly towards helping your community during this Coronavirus crisis.

To help you, there is new guidance to party members - you can find it here: www.libdems.org.uk/covid19

Email me lisa@devizeslibdems.org.uk and let me know what you've been up to in your community, you can help by sharing best practice about how our caring community politics and activism can and is helping vulnerable people during this crisis.

Examples of what some of our members have been up to….

  1. Kym-Marie Cleasby, Sara Holden and Jo Waltham have all been very active in Marlborough Town Council volunteer group, read all about it in this Marlborough News article
  2. I've helped to set up a volunteer scheme for Urchfont Parish Council and have a village veggie scheme which anyone, including the immobile and those in isolation, can join in with. Download our poster.
  3. Mark Mangham is working with the Devizes COVID19 Support Group which now has around 400 volunteers, please take a look at Devizes COVID19 Facebook group
  4. Jan de Jonge and his partner Debbie joined the For The Love of Scrubs - Your NHS Needs You group on Facebook. It is a group across the UK helping people sew PPE for healthcare workers.

We're a party that cares about people, cares about communities and cares about the most vulnerable. I'm sure we will all rise to this national challenge. Whatever happens, we can make a difference.

For top tips on setting up a volunteer group, advice on supporting those in self-isolation, and a range of template forms and useful signposting to other local resources, see this Wiltshire Council guidance - http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/downloads/22151

Wiltshire Council has published a Community Groups Directory. It can be found at http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/downloads/22069

And now the politics bit!

Now is the time to work together in this national effort, however, the Liberal Democrats are holding this Government to account for the years of NHS underfunding, the lack of preparedness despite clear identification of the risk, the speed of response and the evident crises in Social Care.

Our local Tory MP and free-market enthusiast, Danny Kruger will no doubt have to explain how he now gives such wholehearted support for the NHS. His old employer was the Legatum free-market think tank - a part of the US-funded Atlas Group which was actively campaigning for opening up the NHS to competition from US healthcare companies.

Dominic Cummings famously declared that he didn't care about appearances-he'd stuck to the letter of the law and that's all that matters. It sounds like an unsympathetic insurance company wriggling out of a claim but I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt because the real issue, for me, is that appearances do matter. And we'll be able to tell in about a week's time whether I'm right.

This is Aldbourne resident John Gill- ...Aldbourne? Village. Near Ramsbury. No? Near Hungerford? Ring any bells? No? Oh well, it's in Wiltshire, and like most other Wiltshire villages, is packed with people who unthinkingly vote Tory and think Boris is "a right laugh". I've lived in a beautiful 17th-century cottage here for 10 years. My name's John Gillett. But locally I'm known as "John the actor". Probably other things too, but mainly that one, because.... well, because I'm an actor. I'm known as Aden Gillett when I swan about the stage, but John the Actor when I swan about The Blue Boar or Crown in Aldbourne.

      Dear Mr Kruger,

Your unconditional acceptance of the behaviour of your friend Mr Dominic Cummings is profoundly disappointing. In your tweets, and in your letter to the Gazette you have sought to downplay his actions and cast them as just the sort of action any man in that position would undertake.

This is an admirable defence, but it misses the whole point. He is not just any man - he is the most senior advisor to the PM. He apparently did not consider, in his carefully weighed analysis, how his breaking and bending of the rules would look to a national population who had been instructed to abide by them. This alone marks down his judgment below any acceptable level - He doesn't care about a "good look" when that is exactly what he should care about. He set the rules, he must be seen to abide by them, not use cunning artifice to conveniently set them aside. There was no extreme emergency that justified his flight to Durham. He had no reasonable excuse to leave his house, despite his lawyered-up statement delivered on Monday.

This week in the House of Commons the Corporate Insolvency Bill, the Parliamentary Constituencies Bill and a motion relating to our future relationship with the European Union were debated and discussed. However, these were not the main stories this week. As much as I would like to get my constitutional nerd on and tell you all about the reasoning behind the structure of Parliamentary constituencies. Some things are more important.

The Prime Minister must condemn President Trump's behaviour

British foreign policy must always promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law all over the world. The USA is no exception.

The UK has a moral duty to speak out when the freedoms and rights of the people of the US are under attack.

The murder of George Floyd has led to a global outpouring of anger and grief.

From Windrush to Grenfell, from Stephen Lawrence to Mark Duggan, we are not short of our own examples of institutionalised, deep-rooted injustices that shame us all

Racism has been exposed in the most shocking and tragic of ways in Minneapolis but make no mistake - it exists in Britain too.

The disproportionate toll of COVID-19 on people from BAME groups is extremely alarming.

My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have written to the Prime Minister to express our grave concern at the disproportionate toll of COVID-19 on people from black, Asian and minority ethnicity (BAME) backgrounds and are urging the government to take urgent action now to address this.

In the week since the death of George Floyd in the United States, the grief and anger of black communities in the US and closer to home has been clear.

The Liberal Democrats extend our solidarity to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Protests against the killing of black people by police have erupted everywhere from Floyd's home state of Minneapolis, USA, to the UK, Japan, and New Zealand. The world knows George Floyd's name, and his death has fuelled a movement to end police violence against black people.
