Lord Lansdowne says Quarry Site Proposals "Handled Wrongly" by Conservative Council

November 27, 2010 8:00 AM

Lord Lansdowne has attacked the Conservative Council over its handling of potential sites for mineral extraction. Echoing last week's article regarding mismanagement causing huge financial loss Lord Lansdowne lays blame firmly at the council's feet.

In a letter to the Gazette and Herald, Lord Lansdowne states that the council did not specify criteria regarding whether or not a site was viable, which he claims, "has caused unnecessary concern and antagonism".

The Bromham, Rowde and Potterne County division are preparing for a by election following the resignation of Conservative Councillor Philip Browne who has been sentenced to 10 months gaol for theft and fraud of almost £50,000.

Residents in this area have been actively campaigning against mineral excavation. Concerns included a concern that the quarry site would eventually be used for landfill.

Lord Lansdowne recommends that, "The Council's Minerals and Waste Management Team should, in future, take more time and trouble to involve Parish Councils."

The Liberal Democrat candidate in the forthcoming by election, Paul Mortimer, already sits on the Bromham Parish Council. Cllr Paul Mortimer said, "I am working with other members of Bromham Parish Council to make local voices heard on the plans to extract sand and gravel from sites all around Bromham and Rowde"

Should you wish to support Paul Mortimer in his bid to represent you and help your voice be heard on the issue, please contact Fiona on, 01380 840826 or email: fhld@btinternet.com
